You have probably heard the shocking, surprising and even UnAfrican and unnatural news depending on where you come from, your intellectual quotient, your reading habits and and the quality and level of your schooling.

It is said that Kenya and Uganda, despite the high levels of homophobia and the illegality (whatever that means) of homosexuality, are the world’s leading exporters producers of tea and coffee (Germany is a leading exporter of coffee) and are also leading the world for searches of gay porn on Google.

Generally, appetite for "porn"is much stronger than for gay specific terms.

Generally, appetite for “porn”is much stronger than for gay specific terms.

The interest in "man fucking man" is almost insignificant to that of "gay porn " where neither Kenya nor Uganda features.

The interest in “man fucking man” is almost insignificant to that of “gay porn ” where neither Kenya nor Uganda features.

That statistic is totally wrong. Neither Uganda nor Kenya top the world in Interest in gay sex. First, I doubt if Internet penetration in Kenya and Uganda is as high such that those interested in gay sex would be noticeable the world over.

A look at the statistics first.

Our cool “ndugus” from Tanzania lead East Africa and the world in quest of “anal sex”. Ethiopia closely follows Tanzania from behind in the search for anal sex. Kenya is third globally, but only does half the amount of searches as Ethiopia and Tanzania.

Other “anal sex” leaders are Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen. Death to terrorism, death to Al Qaeda!

However, anal sex does not necessarily imply homosexuality. Anal sex is also common in heterosexual relationships.

Which brings us to the second “gay” term – man fucking man.

Unlike “anal sex”, “man fucking man” is definitely a homosexual term. Here, Jamaica outsprints the world in interest in “man fucking man”. Kenya gives them a run for their money, with a close second.

Pakistan also shows some interest here, followed by their close and bitter neighbours, India, who give the topic half the attention that Kenyans and Jamaicans do. Nigerians and South Africans also give the matter half the attention as much as Kenyans and Jamaicans.

However, there’s a big difference here. People search for “anal sex” on Google 6 times as much as they do for “man fucking man”. For every 1 person searching for “man fucking man”, there are 6 people searching for “anal sex”.

But then again, interest in gay porn is higher than interest in “man fucking man”and “anal sex”. 17 times as many people searching for “man fucking man” search for “gay porn” while 2 and a half as many as those searching for “anal sex” search for “gay porn”.

Countries leading here are Fiji, and Guyana. Jamaica only shows half the interest that Fiji and Guyana are poring at exploring these on the Internet. No African country pops up here.

Compared to porn, almost no one searches for “man fucking man”. For every 4 people searching for “”gay porn”and “anal sex”, there are 96 people searching for “porn”.

Additionally, there are more people searching for “boobs” than terms related to homosexuality. Guyana and Fiji feature in those searching for Porn as so does Lesotho.

Pakistan and India are the leading boob people.

Thirdly, and most important, the search trends do not reflect number of people searching for something, but rather, the increase in number of people searching for a term compared to people searching for other terms and those searching from other countries.

Thus, this may explain why developing countries that are seeing more people becoming Internet users are beating developed countries in these searches. Interest in developed countries has normalised while the developing world is just becoming curious.

The verdict, therefore, is that Kenya and Uganda are not the world leading gay porn searchers.
